New Gallery and Forum

Welcome to the new Cliffhangers Forum and Gallery!

After years in the planning, we're finally there.

We are moving away from the current ezboard/yuku forum because we need a bit more control, and a lot less ads (none!).

Unfortunately, this means everyone will have to register a new account.

With your new account you'll also have access to the new gallery. The new gallery provides much easier ways to upload photos plus it will be better for managing and organising them online. We've also upped the size limits on photos to 1280x1280 and 512kb, with the ability to go higher if you think you need it, just ask.

Post in here any comments, criticisms or suggestions for improvement.

Questions and Answers:

What happens to the old forum and gallery?

They'll hang around for historic value, we won't be deleting them or anything rash like that, they just won't be used.

Damo, is there some way to lock the old forum? To prevent people adding more to it or spambots someday destroying it. Maybe even just locking all the threads on the main page or changing each subforum to all can view, only admin can post (if such an option exists!)

Also, can we put a big link to the new gallery on the main page? The tiny link to 'gallery 2' in the corner of the forums is hard to notice. Don't forget there are at least 27 different places on the website the gallery is linked from :p

Any chance of auto magically transferring the old photos / albums across?

It may also be worth noting on the front page that not all forums are availble to guests
I take it the trips and social groups only become visible when you are logged in?

The old forum should be locked up now. Maybe, it doesn't seem to have locked for me, but I'm an admin.

I haven't forgotten the gallery, I just haven't gotten to it properly yet. Hopefully in the next couple of days.

There is a chance, but I won't be completely automagic, it'll take some damomagic too. I'm hoping to be able to import albums for specific users, after they've created a new account. I will of course let everyone know if I and when I work out how.

Yes, this was intentional, still haven't decided whether it's a good idea or not. Thoughts?

Personally I prefer to not be forced to log in to view forum topics. I guess I just don't like it being visible to everyone exactly how much time I waste visiting the forum each day.

On a more practical note, non-members considering joining the club might want to see just how active we are?

I think they should be viewable if you are not logged in. It's just an extra obstacle for non-computer savvy climbers the way it is now.

The fact of the matter is that anyone can create an account, so it doesn't stop people we don't want viewing from accessing it. However it does stop new, unregistered users from seeing the awesome trips and parties we are having (which we still can't put addresses up for because anyone can create an account).

I think that unless accounts are generated only for new members (pretty much impossible without a lot of extra work for the webmaster or treasurer) we should have it all open.

And I have tested the old forums, I can't post (brings up a window where I can request permission from the administrator)

Hey Damo, is there a way of (easily) changing the username character limit, so that I can be A4, instead of needing three characters? And are you able to change the username for my account that I've already created?

Cheers,

A4

Should be all visible now.

You can set yourself not to show in the list of logged in users User Control Panel -> Board Preferences -> Hide my online status.

Sweet, thanks!

For you Adam, I'll do anything. You should be able to change your username to A4 now.

Awesome - can you travel down to Canberra every night and sit watch by my bed to make sure no monsters get me whilst I sleep. If that's stretching it a bit, there is an alternative.

I had a look under the User Control Panel in Profile, Edit Account Settings, but the username field is read-only. Are you able to hack the database, or just plain change my username for me to A4? Maybe it can be done with admin rights, I'm not sure.

Cheers,

Adam

Ah, thanks.

And I'd just like to say, the new forum is sweet, nice work!
