Club Trips

Where Could we go?

There are no limits to where we can go on a trip to, check out the guides at Qurank for info on all the places in south east and north Queensland. Longer trips down south or overseas could be organised if enough motivated people were interested.

The thing is, the trips coordinators are human, and likely busy so if you want to go somewhere, don't whine about it, ask a trips coordinator to set it up.

For some insight into some of our previous trips, check out our Trip reports

Trip Type Info

All the info on what you need to take and what to expect on a club trip.

How do I sign up for a trip?

It is a requirement that all participants in a trip are club members.

To get involved you'll need to let the trips coordinators know with enough time before the trip for them to organize you a place. You should also talk to the quartermasters to arrange any club gear you may need to borrow for the trip.

Usually the trips will be advertised on the Club Forum. The easiest way to get involved is to post your details on the thread for the trip. You can also talk to the trips coordinators at the cliffs, send them an email or call them.

The information we will need from you:

Name: john smith
Transport: Don't have a car, would need a lift - Provide the general area where you live
so we can arrange to have someone drop by if you can't make it to Kangaroo Point
Gear Needs: - Only for some trips, you should arrange your own gear.
Tent needs: Have a tent with two spare spaces - Weekend/Longer trips only
Other camping needs: Would love to borrow a sleeping mat. - Weekend/Longer trips only
First Aid Certified: I have an 'applied first aid' and will be bringing a first aid kit

What makes a trip different to climbing at Kangaroo Point?

Generally on trips we do not top rope. This means that we are lead climbing and there are extra things to be careful about when doing it. To a seconder (ie. a new climber) the only differences are that you have to pick up quickdraws and bolt plates on your way up and clean an anchor. The other significant difference is that belaying the leader is a much more complex and safety critical task.

Anyone whose been down to Kangaroo Point and climbed with us a couple of times is still free to come along, but we will need to run you some new skills on the trip.

What To Bring

The basic gear required is pretty standard across all trip types.

The Basics:

  • A Torch (Preferably a head torch)
  • Spare batteries
  • At least 3 litres of water
  • Sunscreen

Almost all trips will have a 5min+ walk in on steep and rocky terrain so we also recommend the following:

  • Decent walking shoes
  • A Decent Back pack

Climbing gear you will need:

  • A Helmet (Club)
  • A Harness (Club)
  • A Belay device and carabiner (Club)
  • Climbing Shoes (Optional, but Recommended)
  • Chalk-bag (Optional)
  • 2 prussiks (at least) (one short and one long)
  • 1 sewn sling (at least) (60cm) (or something else that can be used as a safety)
  • 1 screwgate carabiner (at least)

The last three things are very necessary, but if you don't own any your leader may be able to lend you some. Items marked (club) can be leant to you by the club, see the quartermasters some time during the week before you leave.

Note: it is your own responsibility to organise your gear before hand. If you can't find the quartermasters at the cliffs, email them, or talk to an exec at the cliffs, to put you in touch with them. They live real close and will not have any issue looking after you if you give them enough notice and courtesy.

Leaders gear:

Leaders should have some idea about the gear they should bring with them. It is their responsibility to check the guide for the area and determine if they need bolt plates, or any other special gear.

  • Bolt Plates (Depends on the area - check the guide)
  • Quickdraws (Club)
  • Rope (Club)
  • Guide Book (Optional)

The Trips Coordinator's

The trips coordinators are the people to talk to if you want want to get on a trip, want someone to set up a trip or just have a question about trips.

The 2010 trips coordinators are Tristan Baskerville, Charlie Driver and Ben Fuzio. Ask about for us at the cliffs or jump on the Club Forum .

What do the Trips Coordinators Do?

The trip coordinators help arrange the club trips by posting where we will be going, where we will leave from and organising the car seats allocation.

The other major job of the trips coordinator is planning our annual three week long Blue Mountains trip - the biggest, and best climbing trip of the year.
