Can I join Cliffhangers if I have no experience?
Yes, our experienced members will provide instruction to help you learn to climb safely.
I am not sure if I will like climbing?
You are able to come along and see if you like climbing for no cost to see if you like it.
What do the Cliffhangers membership fees cover?
Your fees cover instruction, use of equipment, discounts at our sponsors stores and the ability to go on club trips.
When do the Cliffhangers climb?
We climb on Monday & Wednesday evenings from 5:30pm until 9pm at the Kangaroo Point Cliffs.
Do we still climb if it is raining?
No. If the rock is wet it is too dangerous to climb. If it has been raining but the rock is dry climbing may still be on.
What equipment do we need to bring?
The club provides helmets, harnesses, ropes and other essential safety equipment for climbing. If you have your own climbing gear you can bring it to use.
Is transport provided to the Kangaroo Point Cliffs?
No. We do not provide transport to or from the cliffs, but there are a lot of members who drive so you may be able to get a lift home or be dropped to a train, ferry or bus.
How do I get to Kangaroo Point?
Kangaroo Point cliffs is about a 20 minute walk from the city, and it is lit up at night. You can also get a ferry or catch a bus or a train to South Bank, which is about a 10 minute walk away.
I am scared of heights, should I still try climbing?
If you want to try climbing then try not to let your fear stop you, we have helped lots of people learn to climb and overcome their fear of heights. If you have a very bad fear of heights it is probably best you don't try climbing.
Where do you meet for the weekly climbing?
We meet at the Kangaroo Point Cliffs at the base of the cliffs (because we climb up). Walk along the path at the base of the cliffs and look for the QUT Cliffhangers Banner or someone familiar in the club that you know.
Is there an age limit to join Cliffhangers?
Yes, you must be at least 16 years old to join the club. This is QUT policy and is for insurance purposes. You will also need parental/guardian permission to partake in extra club activities like trips away.
Does it cost the same if I only come one day a week?
Yes, the cost is per semester and ensures that the club has enough gear and that it is in good condition. The membership fee to join Cliffhangers is still very good value even if you can't come every week.
Do I need to wear any special clothing?
Not really, you just need to wear clothes that are comfortable and do not restrict your movement. Do not wear clothes that are too good as they could get dirty or damaged whilst climbing
I don't think I am strong enough to climb?
Climbing is not just about strength like you might think it is, it is more about balance, control and flexibility. You need just as much mental strength as you do physical strength to conquer some climbs.
Is climbing dangerous?
Rock climbing is an extreme sport and as such there are implied risks involved. There is a risk of injury, both mild and severe. Cliffhangers is a very safety conscious club.
