Changing ropes

Warning: All of these procedures need to be learnt in the presence of an instructor.

This procedure can be used in situations where an abseiler is required to change from one rope to another, this can be for reasons including changing ropes when on a multi-pitch abseil using fixed ropes and changing from a damaged rope to an undamaged one.

This proceedure if for people abseiling with a backup above the belay device

1. Lock off on the prussic.

2. Attach a second prussic to second rope, as far up as possible.

3. Remove descender.

4. Attach descender to second rope.

5. Tie off the decender.

6. Attach leg prussic to first rope.

7. Stand in leg prussic.

8. Loosen prussic on first rope.

9. Lower weight into tie off slowly, making sure the knot holds.

10. Remove prussic on first rope and leg prussic.

11. Release tie off.

12. Continue abseiling.
