Introduction
The QUT Cliffhangers Rockclimbing Club is based at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia. The club in its current form was created in 1994, however earlier climbing clubs were based out of QUT and its predecessor, the Queensland Institute of Technology (QIT).
The club is open to students and non-students, beginners and experienced climbers. The club encourages an active culture of knowledge transfer between members along with open and robust debate of technical issues.
For more information, check out our FAQ.
Kangaroo Point Climbing
Our most regular activity, is twice weekly evening climbing sessions at our local Kanagaroo Point Cliffs. These sessions are held from 6:00pm to 9:00pm every Monday and Wednesday night.
Each semester we also run an Open Day at Kangaroo Point, complete with cold drinks and a BBQ. It's a great opportunity for new climbers to come along in the daylight and ease their way into climbing.
Structure
The club is governed by a constitution which establishes a core executive and gives them the power to create additional roles in the executive. The club holds general meetings which are open to all financial members. The Annual General Meeting is held in October and the executive for the following year is determined, via a series of secret ballots.
Joining
The easiest way to join the club is to head towards the Membership page and look for the online application form. We'll assess your application (normally within 3-5 days) and contact you via email with the outcome of your application.
If your application has been approved you'll be able to come down to the cliffs on a Monday or Wednesday night for a free trial before paying your membership. Just print out the acceptance notice and bring it along with you to the cliffs.
Membership forms and full details are available here
Club Trips
Whilst Kangaroo Point is a lot of fun for beginners, the real rock climbing is done away from Brisbane. We regularly run trips to places as near as the Glasshouse Mountains or as far away as Mount Arapiles in Victoria. The odd overseas trip to Thailand isn't unheard of either.
Have a look at some Trip reports or check out some photo's in the Gallery. Members should check out the Club Trips page for all the information on how to get involved with trips.
Social Activities
With major events such as the QUT Cliffhangers cocktail party as well as countless other parties, movie nights and pub crawls there is always an upcoming social event within the club.
For what's coming up, whether it be Trips or Social Functions, check out the calendar on the Events Page or the Club Forum
Equipment Hire
The club has almost all the gear you will need to go rock climbing, whether you're just starting out or want to try the more technical stuff without breaking the bank, there is no additional cost for gear hire.
Check out the Quartermaster page for details on what's available and requirements for borrowing it.
If you're looking to buy your own gear some tips can be found on the Gear Information page
Skills
Whilst we do provide technique tips from time to time, we won't teach you "how" to climb, you'll pick that up by coming along having a go and watching the experts.
We will however teach you all the Climbing Skills you need to climb safely and manage the risks involved with climbing.
Community Involvement
As a large club, we understand the impact we have on the fixed hardware, access and availability of climbing areas, for more information, check out the Community page (Coming Soon) to see what we've been involved in.
