4-11-2008 Dwarfland

We left Brisbane a little later than usual with a sense of foreboding due to the looming rain clouds and anticipation for another one of my exciting adventures ;). We were in agreement that if bad weather were to fall upon us we would drive onto Coolum giving us some peace of mind the short of a holocaust climbing was going to happen today!

We made our regular 10 minute stop at the Caboolture BP. 40minutes later after healthy doses of caffeine, steak sandwiches and ice-cream we were on the road again, this time with two new recruits (Joe and Trine) whom we had met at the BP and carefully coerced to join out expedition with promises of hard climbing at an exciting new crag with an easy walk in.

The park was challenging to find and didn’t quite match the description in the guide, but we decided to test our luck and pack up regardless. After 30 minutes of trailing around the mountain without finding the access track and expended of all other options we proceeded to bush bash our way up the slope through the thick scrub, spider webs and bird sized mosquitoes.

We were shredded from head to toe and had sweated enough to fill a small pool, Bjorn was barely recognisable through all his mosquito welts. We had almost given up but gave one last hard push through the scrub and it was revealed to us....

It was like the skies had opened up and the heavens were shining down on us. The clouds had parted above letting the sun shine upon the heavenly cliffs and alleviating the tropical humidity. For some reason all the mosquitoes miraculously disappeared as though this was forbidden ground. It was Dwarfland, We had made it!

Straight away Kim spotted a line to climb that was clear as day (No Biggie – 21) and within minutes Her and Bjorn were geared up and ready for the attack. Mooj and I were 2 meters left on Elfin. The climbing was inspiring, thought-provoking, sustained and exciting all at once. The sheer atmosphere of the place pushed as all to lead several grades higher than we though possible. Kim flawlessly achieved to onsite on No Biggie followed by the Flash by Bjorn while Mooj onsited Elfin and Stewart lead his first 23 with Trina and Joe.
